oil tanker

There is, needless to say, a response plan in place now, which is hopefully adequate for most possible situations. One result of the Exxon Valdez spill is that all tankers are now escorted by two tugboats from the terminal all the way out of the Sound (not a short distance). Given that the Exxon Valdez was inexplicably somewhat off-course when it sprung a leak, this is an understandable requirement.

Also a result of the spill is legislation requiring all tankers in the Sound to be double-hulled by 2015. This is a Polar series double-hulled tanker built by Phillips after the spill.
