hello bear

Just after we'd started to pitch the tent, I stepped across the creek to make supper and discovered this fresh bear track perhaps 10 feet from the tent. (I know, camping too close to the stream to be kosher, but we weren't getting picky about that sort of thing given the circumstances.) Oh well, we'll take our chances there.

No encounter was had. In fact, despite the phenomenal number of bear tracks (and amount of fresh bear scat) we saw on this trip, we didn't see a single bear.

And, though we saw lots of sign of bears and wildlife, other than our daily sighting of a flightseeing helicopter at the Tana Glacier, we didn't see a single sign of people between the drop-off and the lake. No footprints, no campsites, no trash, no trails, no habituated wildlife... nothing. It was very pleasant.
