a word about safety

The building of the pipeline in the mid-70s was a seminal event that is referred to about as often as the earthquake and the gold rush years. It shaped the state by bringing people, jobs, and money to sparsely populated areas.

Pipeline safety seems to be not such a big deal. Coming from a place where taking your shoes off to go through airport security seems normal, the pipeline is shockingly trusting. Eventually, either it's going to leak on its own, or someone will make it leak. We're talking about 800 miles of unguarded, unfenced, unsecured pipeline. They can't possibly monitor its integrity closely enough that they'll catch a leak before it happens, and they certainly don't make it difficult for joe schmoe to access the pipeline. It's actually quite refreshing to feel trusted again!

In this case, apparently emergencies aren't so much of a concern that they feel you actually need to be able to read about what to do in the event of one...
