Seward

From Russian River, we went on to Seward that night. Seward is one of the three major towns from which one gets out into the Prince William Sound area to look at glaciers and whales (although it's not actually on the Sound) (Whittier and Valdez are the other two). Seward is far more appealing than Whittier. It's in a beautiful setting, like Whittier, but it's far more attractive as a town. Plus, there were lots of places to get your wireless internet! Seward is at the end of Resurrection Bay, and is the easiest access to Kenai Fjords National Park, another one of those pesky Alaskan National Parks with no road access.

All over the state, you hear a fair amount about the 1964 earthquake. It's the most powerful earthquake in North American history, at 8.6 on the Richter Scale, and I think it's the second most powerful earthquake recorded in the world. It was centered between Anchorage and Valdez, and created a huge wave that wiped out whole towns in the Sound. Seward didn't get whacked quite as hard, but it got whacked hard enough that they don't build buildings right on the waterfront anymore, for fear of another big wave wiping them out. The great thing about that is that the whole waterfront is a campground, with a bike path all along the shore, so we had a room with a view. The RVs seem to go on forever!
