The fireweed in the mountains is dwarf fireweed. It's one of the first plants to move into recently deglaciated areas. The fireweed on the sides of the road might be six or seven feet tall, but the fireweed we saw on hikes was almost always much shorter -- a foot or two tall. This is a fireweed bud.
